Training of Trainers “Protection of Freedom of Expression Online”



      The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) in Ukraine, together with the Legal Aid Coordination Center and the PRAVOKATOR network of legal clubs, will hold a two-day training of trainers (ToT) in Kyiv called “Protecting Freedom of Expression Online".
The training event will take place on August 19 and 20, 2020 from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. in the premises of the PRAVOKATOR legal club in Kyiv (80 Dmytrivska St.). The training of trainers is carried out within the framework of the ABA ROLI program “Promoting Internet Freedom in Ukraine” and will be followed by further training sessions accredited by the High School of Advocacy of the Ukrainian Bar Association to be held by trained trainers in Lviv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa and Kyiv (in the premises of PRAVOKATOR legal clubs) during September 2020.
In addition to practical exercises and problem solving, the training will address the following issues related to the freedom of expression online:
- conceptual framework of the freedom of expression and information,
- international treaties ensuring the right to the freedom of expression and information,
- European standards ensuring the right to the freedom of expression and thought,
- European Court of Human Rights,
- basics of Internet literacy for lawyers,
- international standards on the freedom of information dissemination and the right to privacy while using Internet technologies,
- restriction of rights and freedoms in the information sector,
- legal framework for blocking access to information resources on the Internet,
- some cases of international legal support of information dissemination and the right to privacy while using Internet technologies,
- ECHR’s practice on protecting the rights to freedom of information dissemination and application while using Internet technologies,
- national judicial practice on protection of the rights to freedom of information dissemination and application while using Internet technologies.
It is going to be a face-to-face event. The training is free of charge.
The expenses covering the travel to Kyiv, meals during the event and accommodation (two nights maximum) will be reimbursed by the organizers after the event. The event will be also video-recorded for organizers’ internal use purposes.
Due to the limited number of seats (20 participants), the organizers reserve the right to select candidates who will participate in the training based on their topic-related experience and readiness to conduct further training events in the above-mentioned cities.
The deadline for submitting applications is August 3, 2020. After this date the registration form will be closed.
For the best presentation of the training material and its final assessment, the selected trainers will also have to fill in questionnaires before and after their participation in the event.
The detailed program of the event will be sent to the selected participants in advance.
